QotD – Families are a Compass

Families are the compass“Families are the compass that guide us. They are the inspiration to reach great heights, and our comfort when we occasionally falter.”

- Brad Henry

Quote of the Day.

Mondays are the day when many of us look at the week ahead, determine the work that needs to be completed, and set our direction accordingly.  This makes today’s quote by Brad Henry a perfect fit.

One aspect of our lives that our culture often neglects is family.  This happens, in part, because we add family onto the direction of our lives, rather than basing the direction of our lives on our family.  If we use our family as the compass that guides us, we don’t need to worry about making time for family – that time is built in.  Instead of squeezing in family time, we are squeezing in the other activities of our lives.

What is the end result?  The end result is that family comes first.  Other life priorities – career, possessions and hobbies fill in the rest.  The results will probably surprise you.  You may discover that you really don’t need to join league softball this summer to maintain relations with your buddies.  You may discover that you can fit all of your work into an 8-hour day.

In other words, we find our lives more complete and balanced despite these changes.  In fact, our lives are more balanced because of them!

If we use our families as a compass to guide us and the inspiration to drive us, we will find ourselves achieving more in the other areas of our lives – not less.
