But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
- I Samuel 16:7 (NIV)
Quote of the Day, Sunday.
Good morning, everyone – I hope you are all having a good weekend! As part of another Sunday for rest and recharging, today’s quote is a verse from I Samuel 16:7. The theme for this week’s quotes will center around inner beauty and persona – the things that truly reflect who a person is.
Note that today’s verse says that God looks at the heart, while people look at outward appearances. Numerous studies have proven this to be true, even beyond what most of us would ever admit. Taller men tend to get more votes, attractive individuals get more signatures for petitions, and the list goes on. The effect of appearance is, to some extent, outside the realm of our conscious minds. Our bias towards appearance is an unconscious reaction. In other words, not only do we look at “outward appearances”, we often don’t even know that we are doing so!
Is this an excuse? Are we free to make bad choices based on appearance then blame our unconscious, human tendencies afterward? No. Today’s verse is a call to emulate God’s criteria for judging others; a call to look at the hearts of those around us. Because of our human tendency to look at appearances, we need to put forth dedicated, conscious effort to judge others based on their heart!
Have you reflected lately on how you are judging your coworkers, friends and family?
I hope you have a relaxing Sunday, a good week, and enjoy this week’s posts!
