Excellent post and it's so true that goals need to be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time Bound) :)

There is also a little technique you can use, if you have the courage that will almost guarantee the achievement of big goals and dreams. It is based on the idea of “social pressure” and it's somehow part of your fourth tip about getting support.

Think about this; let’s say you have a goal to lose a certain amount of weight or achieve some desired level of fitness. You can set the goal privately and tell yourself, “I am going to achieve this goal by August 1.” On the other hand, you can make the goal public by telling all of your friends and family what you intend to do and even give a date for your desired completion.

As soon as you take that goal public, you move into a different state of mind. No longer are you at the mercy of your own self-discipline (which has been tarnished by years of bad habits). Now you have a much more powerful force dictating your day to day actions and decisions.

I have seen this quote attributed to Emerson in other places on the Internet and was wondering if you could help me find the source of it. This particular quote on cultivating gratitude is word for word the same statement made by Wallace D. Wattles in his book, The Science of Getting Rich, in the chapter titled "Gratitude." I know Wattles studied Emerson's works and, in fact, credits him as one of his influences in the preface. So, maybe Wattles used Emerson's words exactly in this section without citation in the chapter, maybe supposing that credit given in the preface would suffice? Anyway, that's why I'm wondering... where does the Emerson quote on this webpage come from - in what work does it appear? I'd love to track it to the source to know. Thanks!

No, not necessarily. Many definitions phrase it as a "general agreement". I haven't seen it defined as 100% agreement by 100% of parties involved, but I suppose it depends on the dictionary used.
